DIMITRIS TSOUKANAS

Ophthalmic Surgeon Dimitrios Tsoukanas was born in 1982 in Athens. He graduated from Athens College with honors and was admitted to the University of Crete in 2001. During his six years of study at the Heraklion School of Medicine, he demonstrated outstanding academic performance and graduated with honors, ranking in the top 5% of his class in 2007.

In the spring of 2008, he attended a three-month training program on patient evaluation for refractive surgery at the internationally renowned Institute of Optics and Vision at the University of Crete under the supervision of Professor I. Pallikaris, and immediately afterward returned to Athens, taking on a salaried position as a clinical assistant at the Athens Vision Institute of Ophthalmology until the end of 2011.

From 2011 to 2013, he completed the first two years of his training in General Ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Corinth and then returned to Athens Vision for one year, focusing exclusively on the field of glaucoma.

From 2014 to 2016, he completed his training at the Second University Ophthalmology Clinic of Athens, focusing primarily on the fields of cataracts and surgical conditions of the vitreous -retinal conditions (posterior segment – cataract surgery). At the same time, he continued to be actively involved in clinical research on glaucoma and was selected to attend, as a fellow, the 10th European Glaucoma Seminar for residents of the European Glaucoma Society in Geneva, Switzerland .

In 2017, he served as a Fellow of the “G. P. Georgariou” scholarship, and in May of the same year, he received the European Board Certification in Ophthalmology (Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology) after successfully passing his exams in Paris. Continuing his training, in 2018, he completed a subspecialty fellowship in Glaucoma at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, and in early 2019, he returned to Greece and rejoined Athens Vision as an external collaborator.

Dr. Tsoukanas has made a significant mark as a speaker or member of the writing team at numerous conferences in Europe and the United States, while also publishing his work in international scientific journals
