What Is Blepharoplasty and Why Should I Have It?
Blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure performed on the eyelids and is typically done for the following reasons:
- Rejuvenates the eyes while preserving your natural features.
- Improves the heavy, tired appearance of the upper eyelids.
- Can reduce under-eye bags and excess fat in the lower eyelids.
- In selected cases, it can also improve the functional visual field.

Our Philosophy – Natural & Discreet Results
At AthensVision, we do not aim for a “plastic,” unnatural look. Instead, we believe in rejuvenating your appearance and revitalizing the periorbital area to achieve a completely natural result.
The design is created with careful attention to the proportions of the face, the function of the eyelids, and the patient’s actual needs. The result should look natural, calm, and relaxed.
Dr. George Charonis’s expertise in oculoplastic surgery combines medical safety with aesthetic precision.
Frequently Asked Questions
An Ophthalmologist specializing in Oculoplastic Surgery has an in-depth understanding of the eye and can accurately assess its condition both before and after surgery. Additionally, they possess the experience gained through training and knowledge of the periocular region and have the necessary microsurgical skills to perform delicate procedures near the eye.
Modern blepharoplasty techniques incorporate the latest insights into aging in the eye area. The goal is not a major cosmetic procedure that alters a person’s individual features, but a personalized procedure that simply turns back the clock and makes us look more rested. Generally speaking, and always depending on the individual, we can turn back the clock by about a decade.
The duration of the results varies from person to person and, unfortunately, cannot be predicted in advance. Key factors that play a role in this are age, smoking, sun exposure, and our genetic predisposition.
In the vast majority of cases, blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthesia combined with mild sedation. There is no pain during the procedure, and any mild discomfort in the first few days after surgery can be managed with simple painkillers.
The duration varies and depends on the exact type of procedure, as not all blepharoplasties are the same. We offer a wide range of procedures depending on the desired outcome and each individual’s specific needs. Generally speaking, however, there is swelling and possibly bruising for at least 1 week. Typically, patients can return to their daily activities in 7–10 days, while the final result will be visible in 3–4 weeks.
We have a fully certified and well-equipped Day Surgery Unit where these procedures are performed with the utmost safety. Our medical team includes anesthesiologists with extensive experience in managing outpatient care and is supported by a highly skilled team of nurses and support staff who will help ensure you have a pleasant experience.
A thorough preoperative evaluation will determine whether you have true ptosis, skin laxity, or a combination of both conditions. In any case, a personalized approach is required to select the best treatment option for your specific situation. Upper blepharoplasty is not a single procedure performed the same way on everyone. It involves a range of surgical techniques that individually correct ptosis, skin laxity, or sagging of the forehead and eyebrows.
Bags under the lower eyelids are caused by fat that naturally exists around the eye. In some of us, mainly for anatomical reasons, this fat finds a way to protrude forward and create bags under the lower eyelids. In the vast majority of cases, simply removing the fat from the inner side of the eyelid without an external incision or stitches yields excellent results without altering the shape of the eyes at all. In other cases, it is possible to reposition the excess fat lower down to smooth the transition from the lower eyelid to the middle third of the face.
In many cases, we can combine blepharoplasty with non-surgical procedures such as botulinum toxin (Botox), hyaluronic acid, mesotherapy, radiofrequency, IPL, etc., to achieve the best possible result.
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty requires extensive experience and particular attention to preoperative assessment. In my opinion, it is the most difficult facial procedure, as even minor errors can lead to undesirable results. For most patients, it is essential to preserve the shape of the eyes and avoid even the slightest alteration. Additionally, the normal function of the eyelids must be preserved without causing any problems for the eye. Performing the procedure from the inner part of the eyelid greatly reduces complications and should be preferred in most cases.
