Biography
Ophthalmic surgeon Vasilis Georgopoulos was born in Athens in 1980 and grew up in Alimos, where he graduated from the 1st “Thucydides” High School with top honors.
After being admitted through the national entrance exams to the Athens Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University among the top-ranking students, he graduated in 2005 with a grade of “Very Good.”
Subsequently, in 2006, as a new physician awaiting the start of his residency, he actively participated in the work of the ophthalmology clinic at the General Hospital Red Cross as an associate for one year, coming into contact with a wide variety of cases and already gaining his first significant experience in the field of ophthalmology.
In 2007, he began his military service at the 421st Military Hospital of Thessaloniki and in Didymoteicho, while he continued and completed his service at the NATO headquarters in Naples, Italy, as a salaried medical corporal. There, he worked for the Greek office as the head of medical coverage, providing first aid and medical counseling to Greek officers and other personnel.
Upon returning to Athens, he worked as an executive in the Medical Department of Bristol Myers–Squibb as Medical Science Manager, responsible for training medical representatives, attending all major international conferences, and delivering seminars in various cities across Greece.
From 2009 to 2010, he served as a rural physician at the General Hospital of Corinth and the Gkouras Health Center in mountainous Corinthia, treating cases across the full spectrum of general surgery and pathology.
From 2011 to 2015, he completed his residency as an ophthalmic surgeon at the ophthalmology clinic of the Red Cross General Hospital “Korgialeneio-Benakeio”, one of the largest and most comprehensive ophthalmology clinics and a center of excellence in Greece, alongside leading mentors.
At the same time, and during his residency, he had the opportunity to observe and work on educational leave at major ophthalmology clinics abroad, such as the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and the Leeds University Hospital in the United Kingdom, as well as in Greece, such as the Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital “Aglaia Kyriakou,” where he focused on pediatric ophthalmology.
During his residency, he gained experience with a particularly wide range of cases, training in both posterior segment surgery—performing procedures for globe ruptures, retinal detachments, intraocular hemorrhages, etc., as well as in anterior segment surgery, performing hundreds of phacoemulsification (cataract) procedures and other surgeries. Furthermore, he trained in the Glaucoma and Retina departments, contributing to studies published in international journals.
In 2014, he volunteered in the campaign of the non-profit organization “Open Arms” of the Friends of Social Pediatrics on the remote islands (Astypalaia, Anafi), providing general ophthalmology services and screenings to the local population.
Upon completing his specialty training in ophthalmology, he took the European Diploma in Ophthalmology exams and ranked among the top graduates, receiving a scholarship from the Hellenic Society of Vitreous and Retina.
Since 2015, he has divided his time as a director and surgical ophthalmologist at the “Dutch Clinic” ophthalmology clinic in Amsterdam, Netherlands, specializing in refractive lasers (Excimer laser, femtosecond laser) and in Athens, collaborating with the “AthensVision” Ophthalmology Institute, while maintaining his own state-of-the-art and fully equipped practice in Alimos.
